El Jibarito

El Jibarito is a long-running restaurant producing classic regional & Caribbean-style dishes in colorful surrounds in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.  After our arrival, we got settled in the hotel and immediately head out to explore the town a bit.  We stopped here for dinner.

They are first come, first served seating and the interior is pretty basic, almost in a cafeteria-style set up.  We ordered a starter of Pastelillos de Pollo -- these fried chicken turnovers were tasty, and would be a great snack with a cold beer.  The sauce served on the side was a weird mix of creamy, tangy, and sweetness, but it worked!

For my main course, I ate the Plantain Tamale stuffed with Pork.  It came with beans and rice and seemed to be a very traditional dish.  The tamale was very soft but did not have that much meat inside.

Keith ordered the Oven Baked Pork Ribs with white rice and red beans.  The ribs were tender and flavorful.

Overall, the food was decent and service was straightforward.  We ate quickly and returned to our hotel to turn in for the night.
