Backshore Brewing Company

Backshore Brewing Company is located right on the Ocean City Boardwalk. We stopped here for some brews and bites before the Fourth of July Fireworks, and it was super crowded with both locals and tourists alike. We sat on the patio at one of the high top tables so we had prime view of the people walking by.

Backshore's motto is: "We brew our beer in the salty air with our toes in the sand and the sun on our faces." Keith ordered a flight sample to try four different offerings:

  • Boardwalk Blonde Blonde Ale - ABV 4.3% / IBU 22 - light and easy.
  • Downtown Sugar Brown Brown Ale - ABV 6.0% / IBU 21 - an English brown ale with a slight brown sugar flavor leaving a hint of sweetness.
  • BUZZ KILLINGTON E.S.B. - ABV 6.2% / IBU 33 - English.
  • Bandwagon IPA - ABV 6.8% / IBU 23 - super fruity and citrusy IPA

We also ordered some snacks to share.  The BOOM! BOOM! Shrimp Basket were large, hand breaded and deep fried, shaken in a spicy sauce and served with a side of ranch dip. The Crabby Pretzel Sticks were topped with crab dip and served with a side of strange cheese sauce for dipping. I think there was added dried oregeno in the sauce. The Dirty South Chicken Pizza came with grilled chicken, mozzarella, bacon, red onion, sweet bbq sauce, and ranch drizzle.

The beer was not that great - very flat and cloudy - almost like old school ale made by monks.  The food wasn't that special either. Very carb-heavy, which was fine to fill our stomachs and soak up all the booze.  I would not go back, but it was a convenient spot on the Boardwalk to stop at and was not as crowded of some of the other nearby bars were.
