Hawk n' Dove

***Special Post by Keith***
Hawk n' Dove, as quoted on their website, "was the venerable meeting place where both sides of our brain got together, politically. Since 1969 the arguments ebbed & flowed, and eventually everyone just moved on to drinking and laughing together. The quintessential American "dive bar". The next chapter was a ground up 15 month renovation under new owners in 2013. The new menu looks to our heritage, and celebrates local farms and ranches with free range birds from Fredricksburg, as well as hormone and antibiotic free beef from Creekstone Farms. Great ingredients like Duroc Pork allow true American Pub fare to be served that satisfies without the fuss. Lunch and dinner are available along with live Bluegrass Brunch on Sunday."  Closest Metro is Capital South.

The Queen Vic

Originally named after the infamous Victorian public house from Britain's popular soap opera "Eastenders", The Queen Vic is a British Pub along the popular H St NE corridor.  Not only do they offer a traditional British menu with all the best comfort fare, they also use local and seasonally sourced ingredients to create a massive chalkboard full of delicious, exciting dishes. Since Queen Victoria was considered the Queen of Europe, they feel no guilt including some French, Belgian, Spanish and German brews and wines. Closest Metro is Union Station.

Breckenridge Ballpark Pub

The Breckenridge Brewery & Pub, now known as the Ballpark Pub, opened in November of 1992 and was one of the first brewpubs in Denver.  Located on Blake Street in downtown Denver's Historic Ball Park Neighborhood, adjacent to Coors Field, this pub is a must before or after a Colorado Rockies baseball game. The Breckenridge Ballpark Pub is conveniently located just two blocks north of the LoDo area with plenty of parking near by.

Granville Moore's

Last date I was here: 1/7/2011

Restaurant: Granville Moore's (http://www.granvillemoores.com/)

Location: H St NE

Total Rating: 4.35
Food: 5, Price: 4, Service: 3, Ambience: 3, Accessibility: 4
What Micky Eats...

Summary: Granville Moore's kitchen proves that good things come in small packages. With only 150 square feet to work with, Granville's kitchen pumps out over 1200 pounds of mussels and over 1400 pounds of potatoes every week. This dark pub style restaurant also serves sandwiches, steaks, seafood, salads, soups and appetizers. Their menu changes with the seasons, and Granville Moore’s selection of Belgian Beers is one of the largest in the Mid-Atlantic. Closest Metro Station is Union Station.

November 2009: This was our second visit to Granville Moore's. Most popular for their traditional moules (mussels) prepared in multiple ways and frites (twice-fried fries, hand-cut) with various dipping sauces such as truffle aioli or chipotle. The mussels were amazing, full of flavor and freshness, and one of the biggest portions for a better price than other area restaurants. The frites are offered separately - the large portion is big enough for 3 people - yet flavored nicely and served fresh, not soggy, like some other places. A great restaurant for a date or with friends; I would definitely come back again.

UPDATE: We went back to satisfy my mussels craving, and it was just as good. Keith opted to try something else on the menu, and was a little disappointed. The bison meat was a little bland and the bleu cheese overpowering. He regretted not ordering the pork chop special. Oh well, we will still come back another time.

What I ate:

Moules Marinere
Steamed mussels in White Wine, Herb Mix, Butter

Moules Champignons
Steamed mussels in a mushroom cream sauce with Hoengarden beer

Frites
with truffle aioli, chipotle, and horseradish sauces

Plus Keith ate:

Clamcakes
New England style, deep fried clam fritters, serve with tartar sauce

Bison Burger Deluxe
freshly ground bison, topped with cheese, served on a potato Kaiser roll
with mushrooms and bacon, served with frites

Moules Fromage Bleu
Steamed mussles with Bacon, Hook’s Blue Cheese,
Shallots, Spinach, White Wine, Lemon Juice

Moules Moraccan
Steamed mussels in a spicy curry sauce with leeks, and lamb sausage

Colonel Brooks' Tavern

Last date I was here: 11/11/2009

Restaurant: Colonel Brooks' Tavern

Location: Brookland

Total Rating: 3.3
Food: 3, Price: 4, Service: 4, Ambience: 3, Accessibility: 3

Summary: Colonel Brooks' is a relaxing place to grab traditional pub fare and a calmer place for the Catholic University students to grab a beer. Apparently, the place hardly rests from 8 to 11 on Tuesdays when it serves up some of the best Dixieland jazz in the District. Since the tavern charges no cover, you can spend your savings sampling the slightly Southern dishes on the menu. These include burgers, a few steak and chicken dishes and hot sandwiches. Closest Metro is Brookland-CUA.

Keith and I ventured to the area of his alma mater one rainy Veteran's Day to tour the nearby monastary. Craving some warm food afterwards, we stopped into Colonel Brooks' and were seated right away upstairs. Our server was very friendly and could tell we were first timers. After Keith asked for a refill on his soda, she kindly brought over a second drink with an explanation that refills are only on coffee but she would offer this to us on the house since we did not know. I thought that was a nice gesture. The food came out fairly quick and typical quality for the average bar/tavern. My fish was cooked well, but I was not to crazy about the fries. I tried some of Keith's coleslaw and it was very tasty - with extra dill. All in all, a decent casual place to grab some food when in the Brookland area.

What I ate:
Fish and Chips
Two pieces of haddock breaded and fried.
Served with tartar sauce and french fries
Plus Keith ate:
Reuben Sandwich
Sliced corned beef, with saurkraut and Russian Dressing
Served with coleslaw
French Fries
with smoked bacon aioli
