Nando's Peri-Peri

A self-service import by way of South Africa, Nando's Peri-Peri features Portuguese flame-grilled chicken served fast and tasty in a newly renovated space. Decorated with African art, a mix of modern and eclectic lighting, and simple wooden tables and chairs, Nando's is a refreshing surprise and change to the chain restaurants that adorn the Chinatown area.

The chicken is grilled to order and served at whatever degree of spice you desire, from a simple lemon-and-herb baste to "extra hot," which is true to its word with an emphasis on birds-eye chili peppers, or peri-peri. Order as a sandwich or wrap or salad or the traditional 1/4 or 1/2 chicken platter entree. Closest Metro is Gallery Place-Chinatown.

April 2010: Even though Nando's Peri-Peri is a world-wide chain restaurant, the food was fresh and atmosphere fun. I was surprised by how good my meal was and could really taste the depth of flavors in the marinated chicken. I ordered the tamest - lemon and herb - while Keith got the hot variety. Even he said he could distinguish the spices and the level was hot but not overpowering on his palate. If looking for a nice spot to duck in for a casual meal, I would definitely recommend Nando's Peri-Peri.

November 2011: We returned to use our Groupon deal and the place was packed and seemed a little disorganized. People crowded along the side as they waited for tables to open up. After about 30 minutes, our name was called and we claimed our table before waiting in line to place our order. It was still "happy hour", yet the cashier could not ring up the special drink prices with our coupon. So we had to pay full price, which was a little shoddy. She sensed our disappointment, but instead of offering us a second drink to make up for it, she said she would ring up a separate purchase. Regardless of the crowded chaos, our food came out relatively fast and was just as tasty as I remember. My salad was so crisp and all the elements came together perfectly - I think it may just be a new favorite.
