Baan Siam

Formerly known as Baan Thai, Baan Siam opened on the corner of 4th and I Streets NW in 2020. After a fantastic run on 14th Street, Chef Jeeraporn ''P' Boom" Poksupthong and her team decided that time had come to upgrade to a bigger space with a better kitchen. Chef P' Boom grew up in Thailand, learning to cook from her mother and grandmother.  Here you can find both traditional and harder-to-find Thai dishes.  Closest Metro is Judiciary Square.

At Home: Thai Larb Lettuce Cups

Larb (pronounced "lawb") means salad, and is one of our all-time favorite Thai dishes.  It is a very common dish served throughout Thailand as well as Laos.  It can be made with beef, pork, or chicken.  We made a version of Thai Larb Lettuce Cups to share with you on What Micky Eats...At Home.  These cups are so fresh and healthy, and whip up in about 20 minutes or less.  Larb is often extremely spicy, but the lime juice and herbs make for an exotic and splendid combination.  Plus, putting the larb in lettuce cups make it an easy appetizer to gobble up.

At Home: Thai Chicken Meatballs & Rice Noodles

For my third Blue Apron experiment...At Home, I made a Thai version of spaghetti and meatballs. Instead of spaghetti, I used wide, flat rice noodles. And instead of a tomato-based red sauce, I used coconut milk and red curry for a smooth, rich sauce with a kick. This warm dish of Thai Chicken Meatballs & Rice Noodles is flavored with classic Southeast Asian ingredients. The meatballs are cooked just to the verge of golden-brown perfection before finishing them in the curry, along with crunchy baby bok choy.

Fojol Bros.

***Special Post by Keith***

After much hype and years of seeing the trucks around I finally had the chance to try the Fojol Bros. truck recently. I usually venture out to the trucks when the weather is especially nice so I'm typically not in the mood for the warm and comforting food that they offer but on this particular day I was craving some quick and easy Thai food - Fojol to the rescue. The Volathai truck serves their Thai inspired cuisine and is the newest addition to the Fojol universe.

At Home: Crock-Pot Thai Coconut Chicken & Shrimp

Cooking chicken in the slow-cooker is pretty predictable, I admit, but thanks to a fragrant spice blend and a good dose of aromatics inspired by the Thai flavors of Tom Kha Gai, this dish sings with flavor. Literally meaning "chicken galangal soup," Tom Kha Gai is a spicy hot soup made with coconut milk, galangal (a cousin to ginger root), lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, and chicken, and often contains some type of mushroom. Here, I put my twist on it to make Crock-Pot Thai Coconut Chicken & Shrimp for this next installment of What Micky Eats...At Home.

Pa Nuang Thai Cuisine

Last date I was here: 06/25/2011

Restaurant: Pa Nuang Thai Cuisine

Location: Manassas, VA

Total Rating: 3.8
Food: 4, Price: 4, Service: 3, Ambience: 3, Accessibility: 4

Summary: Located in a typical suburban strip mall, Pa Nuang Thai Cuisine is a fairly new restaurant in Manassas, VA that serves gourmet Thai food in a casual atmosphere. The dining area is relatively small, but is a nice spot for lunch. Ingredients are fresh, spices are colorful and bright, and the portions are generous. I stopped here for lunch with my parents and we had a great meal for a low price. Plenty of vegetarian options are available on the menu as well as traditional noodle dishes and curry entrees. Be mindful of the chili pepper ratings, as my dish had quite the kick and was a little too spicy for me, even for the "mild" option as indicated. Next time I will be sure to ask for less spice, as I overheard other patrons do as they ordered.

What I ate:
Green Curry Chicken
mild green curry sauce made with coconut milk and mild peppers
mixed with eggplant, bamboo shoots, green beans, red peppers, and chunks of white chicken
served with white rice

Indian Curry Fried Rice with Shrimp
fried rice with Indian spices, mixed with onions, carrots, peas, and grilled shrimp

San Phan

Last date I was here: 10/22/2010

Restaurant: San Phan (http://www.saffronsandiego.com/about.html)

Location: Capitol Hill

Total Rating: 3.4

Food: 3, Price: 4, Service: 3, Ambience: 4, Accessibility: 5

Summary: The prime location of the Thai restaurant San Phan draws many of the after work crowd in for the familiar dishes and happy hour specials. Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

We stopped at this low key restaurant for dinner one night after it was highly recommended by locals and although the flavors were tasty, light and fresh, I prefer the other neighborhood spot, Old Siam. My soup was average and Keith thought his could have been a little hotter and was lacking the scallops and squid as promised. I found the shrimp to be cooked on the light side, bordering on raw, not really to my linking. Overall, the place is ok, service friendly, prices average, but nothing too special.

What I ate:

Thom Ka Gai Soup
Chicken in Thai style creamy coconut milk soup with galangal, mushroom, cilantro and Thai herbs

Chicken Pad Thai
Thin rice noodle stir fried with eggs, bean sprouts, scallions and crushed peanuts

Plus Keith ate:

Tom Yum Talay

Combination of shrimp, scallops, squids and mushrooms in spicy and sour lemongrass broth,

tomatoes, cilantro and Thai herbs.

Kra Thiam Pik Thai

shrimp sautéed in garlic pepper sauce served with steamed broccoli and white rice

Location: San Diego, CA

Total Rating: 3.9
Food: 4, Price: 4, Service: 4, Ambience: 3, Accessibility: 4

Summary: The award winning Saffron Thai Grilled Chicken is San Diego's first authentic Thai restaurant. This quaint eatery infuses spirituality with healthy cooking and an exotic menu with affordable prices and quick-serving atmosphere.

We stopped at this low key restaurant for dinner one night after it was highly recommended by locals and although the flavors were different, they were tasty, light and fresh. My soup was very hot (I burned my tongue) but good. The black jasmine rice was different and healthy. I enjoyed my meal and would come back to try other items on the menu.

What I ate:

Thom Ka Gai Soup
chicken and mushrooms in a coconut soup with lemongrass
served with black jasmine rice

Restaurant: Asia Nine (http://www.asianine.com/)

Location: Penn Quarter

Total Rating: 4.05
Food: 4, Price: 4 Service: 4, Ambience: 4, Accessibility: 5

Summary: Asia Nine's design draws inspiration from different Asian cultures. Jewel tones and rich woods envelop guests with a warm and exotic atmosphere. Elements of Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, and Vietnamese including a full service sushi bar, bar & lounge. Closest Metro is Gallery Place or Metro Center.

Went to Asia Nine for a co-worker’s farewell luncheon. The staff reserved a long table towards the back for our group and provided a two-course selective menu including drinks. I tried one of the specialty drinks – pomegranate lemonade. Served in a cute mason jar, it was sweet, tangy and refreshing. My appetizer and entrĂ©e were fresh and delicious. The portion was very generous and satisfying. Everyone seemed pleased with their choices and the servers were very friendly and attentive. I think I would try dinner or sushi at this place again.

three crispy rolls filled with stir-fried vegetables and served with sweet and sour sauce

Shrimp Pad Thai
thai rice noodle stir fried with a three flavored tamarind sauce and tossed
with shrimp, egg, peanuts spring onion, bean sprouts
