Han Palace

Han Palace located on Barracks Row offers dim sum and Chinese dishes in a casual atmosphere.  Closest Metro is Eastern Market. For New Year's Day, we wanted dim sum!  We walked over to the fairly new second location of Han Palace (first location is in Woodley Park) and saw it was already quite crowded, so we sat at the bar.  While set tasting menus are available - Option A offers all the dim sum with hot tea for $38 per person with a two hour limit and Option B offers the meat and vegetable entree dishes for $48 per person - we decided to order a la carte.

Bodegon

Bodegon offers Spanish tapas, wine, and sangria in a warm atmosphere. Located along Barracks Row, outdoor patio seating is also available.  Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Kaiju Ramen

Kaiju Ramen is specializing in authentic Japanese ramen with a variety of Japanese beer and Japanese Sake. Kaiju means "monster" in Japanese.  They source the highest quality products and ingredients both locally and direct from Japanese suppliers, and their noodles are made in-house daily.  Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Rose's Luxury

Rose's Luxury is the newest restaurant to open along Barracks Row and has already gotten a lot of attention within the first weeks.  Chef Aaron Silverman's menu focuses around small plates and is broken down into a few straight forward categories such as cold dishes, pasta, and grilled items, with two family-style entrees also available.  Many of the dishes are either vegetarian or can be prepared as vegetarian-friendly. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and with this current hot buzz, expect wait times to be a little while.  Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Ambar

"Where southeastern Europe meets Southeast DC," Ambar is a Serbian-owned restaurant along the bustling Barracks Row that features Balkan inspired dishes emphasizing meats and cheeses. The name refers to a Balkan building used to dry maize. With a desire to introduce DC to cutting edge Balkan cuisine, proprietor Ivan Iricanin has created a dining space that will delight and indulge the senses. Primarily featuring "small plates" Ambar will also offer wines and spirits from the Balkans not often experienced by the American diner. Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Bombay Street Food 2

Bombay Street Food 2 is Asad Sheikh’s most glorious contribution to the culture of his native land, Bombay (Mumbai), and the bright and vibrant flavors of India. With his second location taking over the old Garrison, India’s spice heat is now available in Capitol Hill. Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Taco City

Taco City is inspired by the Aztec/Mayan culture, mixing Mexican current traditions with today's modern society.  Located passed the bridge on 8th Street SE (south side of Barracks Row), stop here for Happy Hour specials before heading to a baseball game at Nationals Park.

CHIKO

CHIKO is the first restaurant from The Fried Rice Collective. Chefs Danny Lee and Scott Drewno pair modern cooking techniques with traditional Chinese and Korean flavors, while Drew Kim provides his passion for hospitality ensuring a unique dining experience. Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Sushi Hachi

An amalgamation of traditional Japanese nigiri and simple, yet modern temaki (hand rolls), Sushi Hachi is the newest sushi restaurant located in Barracks Row on 8th Street SE.  The name Hachi comes from the Japanese word for the number 8, which conveniently doubles as a hint to the neighborhood they are located in. Sushi Hachi uses the freshest ingredients to create sushi as it was meant to be and features an 8 course omakase (chef's choice) meal for $65 that we tried during it's soft opening week.  Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Eatbar

Eatbar is a hip gathering spot on Barracks Row with house-cured meats, "green" plates, craft drinks and a free-play juke box. Housemade charcuterie, pork burgers and other meaty nibbles (plus a few leafy options) line the menu with an accompanying list of many deep wines and craft beers. Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Betsy

Who is Betsy?  Well, it is actually the new intimate, open-air rooftop serving American fare and a cocktail program focused on all things gin atop Belga Cafe on Barracks Row. Brought to you Chef Bart Vandaele and team, Betsy is a hidden gem that serves brunch, dinner and happy hour in a lovely summer patio setting. Inspired by the chickens in Chef Bart Vandaele’s backyard, Betsy is the name of his favorite in the flock. No reservations are accepted - just walk in (entrance located in back alley behind Belga's main entrance; follow the chicken footprints!).  Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Pineapple & Pearls

Pineapple & Pearls refers to the "pineapple" as a symbol of hospitality and "pearls" as a symbol of elegance. The alliteration offers a sense of playfulness and fun. From the chef behind Rose's Luxury, this more elegant restaurant next door offers a playful tasting menu comprised of approximately 15 courses with beverages included (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairing, depending on your preference) for a singular ticket price that is all inclusive; tax, tip, food and beverages are included.  Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Garrison

Garrison serves seasonal American cuisine along Barracks Row. Best known locally for his cooking at Poste Moderne Brasserie, Chef Rob Weland brings us this new restaurant that has received high acclaim early on, with special emphasis on freshly baked breads and creative vegetable dishes. Barracks Row Culinary Education Crawl 2014

This past weekend, Barracks Row along 8th Street SE, became a cooking school campus with the 2014 Barracks Row Culinary Education Crawl. Over 20 classes were offered from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday from establishments such as Senart's, Matchbox, Ambar, and Belga Café . We went to last year's event, and decided to check out the "Syrah & Shiraz: A Succulent Study" wine tasting class offered by DCanter this year.

Medium Rare

Medium Rare is brought to us by Mark Bucher, the chef who continues to ride the hamburger wave locally with his mini-chain BGR: The Burger Joint. Serving mainly steak frites, we went to the Barracks Row location for the brunch menu. Closest Metro is Eastern Market.

Baseball Eats #OpeningDay

It's baaaaack! Baseball season, that is. Today is opening day of the 2013 Major League Baseball season, and our local Nationals are the World Series favorites this year.  With so many new restaurants now open (or opening soon) near Nationals Ballpark, I wanted to highlight some great places to eat before or after the game.

Tash

Tash is the Persian word for "flame" and one of the newest restaurants to open along my beloved Barracks Row.  Serving Iranian and Mediterranean cuisine from a wood-burning brick oven and a giant open-flame charcoal grill, Tash is brought to us by husband-and-wife owners Nariman (Nari) Modanlou and Vanessa Lim.
