Keith and I took a weekend trip to Florida to soak up some sun before the dreaded winter season arrives. We flew into Tampa and drove about one hour to Anna Maria Island - just across from Bradenton. It was a little late, so we decided to stop by Oma's for takeout. The place is not fancy, but the staff is very friendly and we only waited about 15 minutes for our food to be made. We ordered a medium cheese pizza to share, a hero for Keith and a calzone for me. I noticed they gave us two pizza boxes and a bag, but didn't think of it until we arrived home and I opened the box to see not the pizza, but my huge calzone. The stuffed moon shaped pie was beautifully golden brown and was literally the size of a whole pizza flipped in half. I added mushrooms to the classic cheese version and decided to tackle the calzone alone and skip the pizza (it can hold as leftovers). Keith's sandwich was also very large and the meat was pretty thick. He did not care for the bread as much, stating it was too soft and did not hold up well to the marinara sauce. Nevertheless, he ate the whole thing and still had room for a slice or two of pizza. We had enough leftover calzone, however, to last us the rest of the weekend. Overall, Oma's is a decent place with generous portions and is an alternative to all the seafood you will find on the Island.
