MGM Roast Beef

MGM Roast Beef is a casual local sandwich shop in the Brookland/Brentwood area of NE DC. The space is large enough to house a V-shaped counter with 22 seats along one side and a carryout line along the other.  Roast beef, roast turkey, ham, tuna salad, or chicken salad sandwiches are available as well as a small selection of soups and salads.  Breakfast sandwiches are also available in the mornings.

Those queueing up for takeout have a direct view of four succulent hunks of meat being carved to order on juice-laden cutting boards: a whole, bone-in ham; a turkey breast (legs are available as well); a roasted top round of beef (cooked medium); and that brisket, with its glistening, fatty deckle flap being neatly trimmed away.  Keith and I stopped by for lunch on our way to the DC Brau Brewery.  We stood in the queue on the left side of the room and grabbed a sheet of paper to mark off our orders.  Here you select what type of bread, meat, and condiments you would like and hand it to someone behind the counter.  As we waited in line, I noticed others who came in and sat on the right side of the room.  There, a server comes up to and hands you a sheet of paper to make your selection, which gets added to the pile.  But then they bring you your sandwich on a plate, whereas we were in the to-go line and got our sandwiches wrapped - a little confusing for first timers.  Either way, service was decent.  Be sure they get all your condiments right, as mustard was left off of mine.  Also, somehow Keith's sandwich got skipped in the queue and we waited a little extra longer for them to make it.  The meat to bread ratio was perfect, and I appreciated the high quality cuts of meat.  There was a slight sprinkle of black pepper on my turkey breast, but I wanted more with a dash of salt.  Keith got the combo, which comes with a side of fries and a drink.  I did not care for the fries - too greasy for me.  Keith thought they were really good and similar to Five Guys.  Overall, MGM provides a satisfying sandwich, but with its far NE location, I would not come back regularly.  Also, parking is extremely limited.
