H &Pizza

At H &Pizza, pizzas are made fresh to order using an assembly line style of ordering, where customers move along a service line and customize their pizza, choosing between three doughs, six sauces and spreads, six cheeses, twenty toppings which include proteins and vegetables, and sixteen finishes and oils, which are applied after baking.  Closest Metro is Union Station.

One of the newest joints to open along H Street NE, we stopped by H &Pizza for dinner on this beautiful evening.  The line was fairly long when we arrived as we noticed they make each pizza to order.  While this idea of freshness is appreciated, it causes somewhat of a bottle neck with the line.  Some customers were confused and wondered if they had to stand in the long line even to order "a whole pizza to go". They were explained there is only one size of pizza, and yes you must stand in line as there is no "take away" or call ahead option available at this time.  Once you get to the front of the line, the pizza takes 90 seconds to cook.

You pick up your pizza, pay at the register (drinks available here too), and then find a seat at one of the larger community style tables.  We ordered the Moonstruck loaded with red pepper, chili oil, mushroom truffle, goat cheese, mushrooms, fig marsala, and crushed black pepper.  The ingredient combination was unique, although Keith felt the figs were a bit too sweet and overpowering.  He also thought the cold finishing sauces cooled off the pizza too much.  I liked the oblong shape of the pie, allowing for about 8 small square pieces.  We also ordered a "build-your-own" pizza with classic tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, spicy sausage, and Parmesan cheese.  This was a little more traditional with some heat from the sausage.  My only complaints were that the music was blaring and super loud.  Also, since the line went out the door, annoying flies came inside and were so pesky around my food. I had to constantly shoo them away. Overall, I enjoyed the pizza flavors, perfectly chewy and thin crust, and prices. At $8.64 for a personal pizza with unlimited toppings, a visit to H &Pizza cannot be passed up. I look forward to trying some of the other combinations like the Jenny, with pesto and shrimp or the Backyard Garden loaded with veggies. Salads, desserts, beer, and wine are also available.  Just be prepared to wait for a while - you can do what one guy did and order a beer to drink while waiting in line. A perfect way to pass the time!
