Fractured Prune

The offbeat chain Fractured Prune sells cake donuts made fresh-to-order that are dipped in Day-Glo-bright glazes and topped with sweet treats that will make your dentist cringe.  Specialty donuts include Peppermint Patty, Lemonade, and Blueberry Hill.  The original shop is in Ocean City, MD, but I recently visited the one in Lancaster, PA for a quick breakfast before exploring the Amish farms. UPDATE: As of April 19, 2015, this location is CLOSED.

The shop in downtown Lancaster is located on the corner with street parking outside. We found a spot at the meter and walked inside. We were greeted warmly and recommended a few "breakfasty" donuts to try. Keith and I decided to share four donuts and we each got a cup of hot tea to go with. First, we tried the French Toast made with maple glaze, and topped with cinnamon sugar. Very close to it, and probably my preference of the two, we also tried the O.C. Sand with a honey glaze, and topped cinnamon sugar. The cake part itself was a bit crunchy and the cinnamon sugar coating was perfect.

I also wanted something "fruity" and poorly chose the Creamsicle. Covered in an orange glaze and powdered sugar, the orange flavor was lacking and it just tasted like a regular glazed donut. To satisfy our chocolate fix, the dude behind the counter suggested his favorite special donut - the Puppy Chow - a chocolate donut with chocolate glaze, peanut butter chips, and powdered sugar. Again, the cake part was crunchy and the peanut butter chips melted nicely in my mouth. This was my favorite donut of the four we shared.  All were incredibly fresh and not overly sweet or filling.
