Hawk n' Dove

***Special Post by Keith***
Hawk n' Dove, as quoted on their website, "was the venerable meeting place where both sides of our brain got together, politically. Since 1969 the arguments ebbed & flowed, and eventually everyone just moved on to drinking and laughing together. The quintessential American "dive bar". The next chapter was a ground up 15 month renovation under new owners in 2013. The new menu looks to our heritage, and celebrates local farms and ranches with free range birds from Fredricksburg, as well as hormone and antibiotic free beef from Creekstone Farms. Great ingredients like Duroc Pork allow true American Pub fare to be served that satisfies without the fuss. Lunch and dinner are available along with live Bluegrass Brunch on Sunday."  Closest Metro is Capital South.

My friend Pat and I were looking for a place to grab a decent bite to eat and watch the game this weekend so we stopped by the Hawk n' Dove. The recently renovated bar was surprisingly empty around 8 pm (perhaps due to the rainy weather on this night) so we were able to grab a prime seat with a good view of the multiple TVs above the bar. The new space is pretty impressive, especially compared to what it used to be.  I have to say I was a little nostalgic for the dingy old pub though.

The friendly and personable bartender was quick to offer drinks and switched the channel on the closest TV to our preferred game. The draft list is decent but nothing to out of the ordinary. Same goes for the menu. Pretty typical bar selections with some added pizza options. I ate a Corned Beef Reuben with melted cheese, kraut, special sauce, and purple slaw on seeded rye bread.  My buddy had the beef tenderloin sandwich special. I would say my sandwich was a little better than average.  I would order it again but would not make a special trip for it.   All these Xavier C places blend together a little for me.   Pat, on the other hand raved about his sandwich and specifically said he'd like to return to the Hawk n' Dove next time he is in the neighborhood. Perhaps this had something to do with the free shot of rye we were given after settling up our tab.
