Familijny Bar Mleczny is a Polish cafeteria in Warsaw offering home cooked traditional meals at very cheap prices. Keith and I went to lunch at the Myzceny Bar Familinjy to experience a long standing Polish tradition that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The Polish menu is posted on the wall and you select your dishes before queuing and paying the cashier. An English menu is available at cashier. Once you have paid, you wait at the food counter where you dishes are served up.

I noted a couple mushrooms items, unfortunately they were all out. So after picking 4 different things and being told "No" by the lady behind the cashier, I gave up. Keith also asked for a few items he'd been waiting to have, such as
golombki - but again was told "No."
Seeing our frustration, the cashier suggested he try the
meatballs. Expecting to be the same as the golombki filling, he agreed. However, the meat was a bit different and the tomato sauce also had other spices than he was used to. Not his favorite dish. It came with a side of boiled potatoes covered in fresh dill.
Keith also ordered the
meat pierogis that were boiled and plump-full of a beef and pork mixture. It was a nice change to have them boiled, as opposed to fried as most other versions we'd had in Poland were prepared so far.
Additionally, he ordered two cups of
kompote - a warm berry punch. The kompote was sweet with evidence of macerated raspberries on the bottom of the cup. It would have been better appreciated on a cold day.
Though I did not get to eat anything myself, the restaurant/cafeteria was pretty popular. I can see how they might run out of the familiar dishes early. Keith's entire meal, including our drinks, came out to about $7. There are many similar cafeterias all over the city, so check it out if you are looking for a casual place to eat lunch.
