668 The Gig Shack

668 The Gig Shack is a downtown chic café open for lunch and dinner that stays true to its Montauk roots, with an international twist. Featuring live music on most nights, fresh, local ingredients, homemade baked goods and a commitment to authenticity, the Gig Shack fuses global surf cuisine within downtown Montauk.

We spent the day in Montauk, and after visiting the Lighthouse in the morning, we parked the car at our hotel and walked the main strip to find a spot for lunch.  The Gig Shack had a nice patio with plenty of seating.  It was such a beautiful day, I couldn't resist.

As a starter to share, we ordered the Grilled Local Oysters with red wine mignonette, butter, basil, and Parmigiana Gouda.  The oysters were pretty plump, but were overpowered by the cheese.  To go with, Keith ordered a Dark & Stormy, while I ordered a glass of local wine - 2014 Bedell Taste Rosé, Cutchogue, NY.  It was pretty refreshing with light notes of cherries.

I also ate the Billy Goat Salad with added grilled shrimp. Panko-crusted goat cheese balls, beets, and toasted almonds shared the plate full of Romaine lettuce.  The candied ginger vinaigrette was very sweet.  Overall, I liked the salad and was a light offering for lunch.

Keith ordered the Blackened Local Fish Montacos.  You can choose two or three (he chose two) and they are topped with homemade mango salsa and a creamy coleslaw, all in a crunchy corn tortilla.  The hard shell was odd, as typically we are used to fish tacos in soft tortillas.  Nevertheless, the tacos had good flavor, but needed a few splashes of hot sauce to satisfy Keith's tastes.

The food and ambience at the Gig Shack was fun, but the prices a little steep.  My total bill was just under $100 - which to me is high for what we ate and having only one drink each.
