Summary: This small Japanese restaurant can seem cramped at first, but was sufficient for our date night. Other reviews suggested the cramped atmosphere of Sakana would not be suitable for a casual party less than four or five, but we really enjoyed ourselves. This low-key spot had a small menu of Japanese cuisine, but the real attraction is the fresh sushi and reasonable prices. Closest Metro is Dupont Circle.
Like a great character actor in a film, Sakana doesn't have flashy star quality and is not a headliner. Easily overlooked (we literally walked right past it and had to double back); Sakana still offers good food and service in an unobtrusive and pleasant setting. The specialty rolls are creative and tasty, but the appetizers were a little lacking in portion and flavor. Although sake is not on the menu, they offer a hot or cold variety when asked – Keith had the cold draft sake, which he enjoyed.
What I ate:
Yakitori
Chicken skewers with scallions and teriyaki sauce
Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura
California Roll
Spicy Tuna Roll
Spider Roll
