J&G Steakhouse

Rated as a top 100 Restaurant in Washington, D.C., J&G Steakhouse is a showcase of Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's favorite dishes from his New York restaurants and an inspired selection of worldly steakhouse classics.

Overseen by Executive Chef Philippe Reininger, who opened the restaurant for Vongerichten in 2009, the menu combines premium meats grilled to perfection and fresh seafood with internationally inspired flavors and locally sourced ingredients. Seasonal sides, well-constructed burgers and sandwiches, and enticing desserts offer cuisine that goes beyond traditional steakhouse fare. Closest Metro is Metro Center.

I went here for lunch today with my colleagues to celebrate our boss' birthday. Located in the W Hotel, we made reservations for 11:30am, however when we arrived the doors were locked and were told the restaurant did not open until 11:45am.  Strange...after waiting only a few moments we were seated in the main dining room.  The dramatic high ceilings created a light and airy feel and the sun shone in nicely from outside.  Our servers were attentive to details, answered questions regarding the menu and drinks, as well as called attention to our "birthday girl".  I ordered the prix fix lunch menu picking the vegetarian option, while others ordered the steak option, or off the regular menu and sampled the cheeseburger, crab cake sandwich, or side of grilled asparagus.  I really enjoyed my soup - very mild, velvety smooth, not overly coconutty nor sweet.  It was very hot and surprisingly filling.  My sandwich was ok - the mushroom was good and the salad very nice, but the bread was a little too hard to chew.  My boss ordered the hangar steak and found it to be cooked very well and very flavorful - not needing the sauce that accompanied it.  She really enjoyed the fries as well. By the time dessert came, we were already stuffed.  My sorbet was a generous portion and intense in fruit flavors.  Another colleague who had ordered the cookie plate had plenty to share with the rest of the table.  Overall, we really enjoyed our meal and the prices were not too bad for the quality of food received.  The prix fix menu is the best bet. I must note that you should give yourself extra padding in time and enjoy the leisurely long lunch, as they let you linger for quite a while.  I would be inclined to return for dinner sometime.  Make easy reservations to J&G Steakhouse on CityEats.
