The Shrimp Station is a full service speciality shrimp restaurant that originated in beautiful Waimea in Kauai, where I stopped for lunch after visiting Waimea Canyon. Their newest second location is right in the heart of Kapa'a across the Chevron station. You’ll smell the incredible aroma of garlic and spices as you approach on the highway, and it’s a great place to stop before or after touring the Westside. They offer a wide variety of shrimp dishes including Coconut Shrimp, Garlic Shrimp, Cajun Shrimp, Thai Shrimp, Shrimp Tacos, Shrimp Burgers, and more.
I was starving as we drove back down from the mountain, so we pulled over at this hole-in-the-wall looking stand. There were many other patrons, mostly tourists, already standing in line or sitting at the picnic tables, so I had a feeling this place was either really good or just convenient for hungry passer-byers. Oddly, I was not in the mood for shrimp probably since I had it for
dinner the night before, but I was sooo hungry that I was willing to order it again. Then, I saw the day's special advertised as a
Mahi Mahi Burger for only $7.50 so I ordered that instead. I was expecting a ground up fish patty of some sort, but instead received a large fish fillet that was nicely golden brown. A delicious looking fish sandwich rather than a burger. Keith was still regretting the
coconut shrimp we got in Maui, so he opted for the
Sweet Chili Garlic Shrimp this time, that came with many peel and eat shrimp covered in a spicy-garlicky sauce over steamed white rice. We both devoured our meals and continued on the road with happy full bellies. Later in the week, we drove past the second location and were a little bummed to see that the Shrimp Station is expanding to be more of a chain restaurant. Nevertheless, the shrimp here are among the freshest and the fast laid back service cannot be beat.
