Intrigued, we checked out From Scratch located directly behind our hotel. JB ordered this award-winning burger, topped with shoestring onions, shredded iceberg and Goldcreek smoked cheddar. It was served with house-made Yukon Gold chips. JB is a fan of stout and porter beers, so she also ordered a local Epic Brewing Company's 825 State Stout that was dark, robust, and right up her alley. JB is quite petite, so I admired her manly meal choice (a girl that can eat like that is a-ok in my book), and she was very pleased with her choice. She noted there was something sweet in the sauce that was addictive, and could see why this burger took the title.
I had a hard time deciding between a couple starters or a pizza. I ended up going with the Mushroom Pizza topped with arugula, caramelized onions, mushroom medley, goat cheese and mozzarella. The sweet onions were accentuated by the sweet balsamic drizzle on top of the arugula. The crust was much more chewy and airy than the other pizza I had in SLC, and overall a decent gourmet pizza.
The decor was clean, and an rustic/urban mixture that I dubbed "farmhouse chic." The lighting was bright and welcoming, with contemporary art pieces on the wall and colorful orchids on each table. Overall, we enjoyed this restaurant very much, and I was surprised to not see more hipster patrons. Instead, the clientele were mostly senior females, or families with young children. Also, majority of the nearby establishments were vacant or "for lease", making From Scratch stand out all alone on the strip. I hope they fill up the area with other great establishments, as the location was perfect right off of State Street.
