Vidličky a Nože (Fork & Knife)

Vidličky a Nože (Fork & Knife) is a non-smoking traditional and quality Czech restaurant at Smichov in Prague, walking distance from historical center of Prague.  The kitchen is based on excellent Czech and international cuisine, friendly environment and great beer, including Pilsner Urquell and non-filtrated Staropramen.

Keith immediately ordered the non-filtrated Staropramen.  He found it had a little more depth in flavor than the other Czech pilsners, but nothing to go out of your way for.  Since it was not filtered, there was more body - similar to a hefeweizen.

After placing our orders, we were served complimentary country bread topped with mashed garlic puree and slices of red onion.  The spread was like hummus and humbly tasty, but killed your breath right away.

I was still full from our lunch, so ordered something small from the starter section - Traditional Potato Dumplings with Chicken and cheese sauce.  These fritters were dense and unlike anything I'd had before, with just a chunk of chicken inside.  The cheese sauce was just a simple beschamel that was kind of bland.

Keith ordered one of the daily specials - Chicken & Pork Schnitzel.  It came with an acidic Bavarian Potato Salad that was a bit too wet from all the vinegar, which made the meat a little soggy as they were perched on top.  It was a very large portion all together.

Fork & Knife was off the beaten tourist path, and most of the customers were locals.  However, I found the food to be just average.
