MezzeBox founder Johnny Seikaly grew up between Lebanon and the United States, eating some of the best food in the world out of his mother's kitchen. After starting a family of his own, he set out to preserve his family's traditional recipes so that his kids could enjoy the same comfort foods he grew up with. He sought out the great family cooks to learn the recipes and techniques, and he is now happy to pass on the family secret to you: by eating well, one lives well and finds happiness.
I was contacted by the company to check out the service for myself. My menu included sides of Stuffed Grape Leaves - hand-rolled grape leaves, stuffed with rice, parsley, tomatoes and onions and stewed in a lemon juice and olive oil sauce. Plus, Baba Ghanouj - roasted eggplant, sesame paste, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil, spiced and blended to perfection. This is another vegetarian dish that is best eaten with the pita bread. Both the starters were incredibly fresh and bursting with flavor.
Rice & Lentil Salad - lentils and rice seasoned with nutmeg, simmered to perfection and topped with caramelized onions. This dish is vegetarian, and while it is great at room temperature, I enjoyed it heated up. It was very comforting and savory.
Kafta & Potatoes - ground beef patties with parsley and onions, served with roasted eggplant, potatoes and tomatoes. Keith enjoyed these with Chicken & Rice - mildly seasoned lean ground beef simmered in homemade chicken broth and topped with baked chicken and roasted almonds and pine nuts. Unfortunately, I could not eat either of these dishes due to the beef, but Keith found it to be quite hearty. He even used the leftover kafta and pita bread to make a little wrap.
Overall, we really enjoyed all the spices and could taste the "homemadeness" of each recipe. I appreciated how each dish was already prepared and packaged in its individual container, with a simple sheet of instructions for reheating. This really took the thinking out of dinner - as it was so easy to plate, reheat, and eat!
