We just arrived in Portland for a weekend visit before heading south to wine country and planned to meet up with some old friends of ours for breakfast. They used to live in DC and have been living in Portland now for the past 5 years, so it was great to catch up with them. They recommended this popular spot since it was close to our hotel. No reservations are accepted, so we happily walked over (being up early still on East Coast time) to wait in line before the doors opened at 9am. Already a line had formed down the block, but we were lucky to get a table once the screen door opened.
Keith ordered the Chicken Fried Steak served with breakfast potatoes, housemade country sausage gravy and two eggs over medium. The steak was thick and filling with a nice crunchy texture.
I enjoyed the Mixed Mushroom Scramble. A mix of wild & cultivated mushrooms are sauteed with fresh thyme & madeira, then rolled into a fluffy three egg scramble with goat cheese. A salad of local tender lettuces in creamy lemon vinaigrette was served on the side. This was a generous portion that was enough to feed two people.
Everything tasted fresh and really hit the spot. This breakfast was delicious and perfect to start our day touring the city! I highly recommend the Screen Door for brunch - but get there early to snag a table.
