Marco Polo

Marco Polo is a small family restaurant within the old city walls of Dubrovnik where in summer you can dine in a beautiful courtyard on typical Dalmatian dishes presented in a modern way.

This place was quite popular and luckily we were wise to make reservations in advance, as we saw them turn many patrons away who did not have the same foresight.  I noticed a cute little wine map of the various offerings from each region in Croatia hanging on the wall behind us.  The favorites that we enjoyed during our trip included Posip (white), Rose, and Plavac Mali (red).

Sitting in the charming courtyard, we ordered a bottle of 2018 Plavac Mali,  Mrgudić. This quality dry wine has dark ruby color and rich and strong flavor of Mediterranean herbs and fruits.

To refresh our palates we ordered Oysters on Ice - served raw and fresh with lemon wedges.  These flat briny oysters from Ston were delicious.

We also shared the Caprese Salad with Buffalo mozzarella.  It was studded with tart cherry tomatoes, roasted tomatoes, black olives, arugula, and topped with a bright basil pesto.

For my main dish, I ordered the Istrian fuži - home-made, traditional pasta tossed in a smooth and creamy white sauce of shrimp and mixed mushrooms. The final touch to this dish is fresh Istrian black truffle leaves gently sprinkled on the top. Black Istrian truffle has an intense and unique aroma which is a perfect match to pasta dishes and gives the dish a special, woody and exotic note.

Keith ordered the Duck - marinated duck breasts with raspberry cream served on grilled fennel. It was cooked perfectly, and he also enjoyed this paired with the red wine.

Overall, we had a wonderful meal at Marco Polo and appreciated the high-quality ingredients and impressive wine list.
