Nautika

Nautika Restaurant lies on the very edge of the sea at Pile, alongside the western entrance to Dubrovnik's Old City. From its unique terraces, diners can enjoy a truly one of a kind view of the Adriatic and the fortresses of Lovrijenac and Bokar. The restaurant's chef, Mario Bunda, leads a team whose varied offerings include delicacies from the local waters of the Adriatic. The restaurant is housed in the former Dubrovnik School of Maritime Studies, where it welcomed famous seafarers since as far back as 1881. Today the restaurant serves to preserve the location's rich history, while retaining the noble atmosphere of Dubrovnik's reign as a republic. In 2008, Nautika Restaurant was recognized as the sixth most romantic restaurant in the world by the much respected Condé Nast Traveller magazine.

We made reservations well in advance and I was very excited to dine at this restaurant.  We were seated outside with a lovely view of the fortress and our servers were dressed in full tuxedos with white gloves and provided superb service all night long.  We ordered a bottle of Croatian Rosé - 2021 Saints Hills, Pelješac. It was dry and refreshing!

We selected the five course tasting menu at 990 kuna per person, or roughly $135 and had some of the best dishes of our entire trip.  To start, we were presented a palate cleanser of a meringue topped with tomato gel.

The Tuna Tartare was slightly smoked and served with orange chutney, wasabi mayonnaise, lemon, and bruschette.  It was topped with a generous pouring of olive oil.  Like the Italians, I learned that the Croatians are deeply proud of their wine and olive oil.  The chef here has partnered with local olive oil farms to showcase the varieties and I especially liked the intense oil.

Next, we enjoyed a very light Fish Soup with white fish mosaic, parsley fluid, and mussels.  It was my least favorite dish of the night as the broth was lukewarm.

The star dish and both of our favorites was the Shrimp served with semolina gnocchi, beurre blanc, parsley cream, and almonds.  The shrimp was meaty and cooked perfectly and the beurre blanc was decadent.  We loved it!

Another highlight was the White Fish Fillet served on a bed of cherry tomatoes and young spinach leaves, with olive oil and vanilla cream.  A piece of crispy skin was placed on top to make it look like a sail boat.  It was a fun and tasty dish.

Lastly for dessert we enjoyed the Chocolate - a ball of chocolate filled with hazelnut mousse and topped with gold leaves.

We paired it with another cocktail - Four Roses Bourbon for Keith and a Negroni for me - which came out with a grand presentation of their own.

If this was not enough, they provided us another complimentary cocktail made with red wine and orange liquor with a large chunk of ice. It was like a sweeter and stronger sangria.

All in all we had a very romantic dinner out at Nautika with impeccable views of the sun setting behind the Old Town Walls and the Adriatic Sea.  I highly recommend you make reservations here for a special dinner out while visiting Dubrovnik.
