Frank Pepe Pizzeria

Frank Pepe Pizzeria was founded in 1925 and is one of the oldest and best-known pizzerias in the United States. Known locally as Pepe's, is has its original location in the Wooster Square neighborhood of New Haven, CT, as well as stores in Fairfield, Manchester and Danbury CT, the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT, and in Yonkers, NY.  On our drive home to DC we made a pit stop for lunch at the Fairfield location.

Known for their simple and humble Neopolitan-style pizza, "apizza" (ah-beets), the most popular choices are  the Original Tomato Pie and the White Clam Pizza.  We ordered both, adding extra mozzarella to the tomato pizza.  They also have a couple other stand outs like Shrimp with Red Peppers and a meat filled pie with Sausage-Bacon-Pepperoni-Salami.  I noticed a few other tables ordered a salad to start, but we dove right into the pizza.  The clam pie was loaded with tons of garlic and the clams were plentiful.  The crust was chewy on the inside with a nice char on the bottom, from the hot oven.  The tomato pie was made with fresh tomatoes and plainly seasoned - very different from traditional plain pizzas.  The cheese added that extra gooey touch and I actually found eating both the clam and tomato together tasted great as they helped balance each other out.

To drink we each ordered a Foxon Park Soda, served at Pepe's since 1925.  I tried the caffeine-free White Birch Beer and Keith got the Kola. We just got a 12 oz bottle, but a 1 liter plastic bottle is also available if you want extra to take home.  I found the soda to be incredibly sweet but the flavor was light and natural tasting, similar to a smoother root beer.

Overall, Pepe's was a classic Connecticut pizzeria with super friendly staff, reasonably priced fare, and appropriate for friends and families to hang out.  If driving through (or staying longer), grab a pie from Pepe's and you won't regret it.
