Acclaimed Chef Richard Sandoval’s lively neighborhood Latin-Asian inspired restaurant, Masa 14, is pleased announce a once-a-month pop-up “Sunday Sushi School” led by award-winning restaurateur and sushi chef, Kaz Okochi. The pop-up class will take place on the first Sunday evening of each month through the remainder of the year, from 6 PM- 9PM. Closest Metro is U Street.
Chef Okochi, who is also a partner/owner at Masa 14, will teach patrons how to create the rolls along with the Masa 14 culinary team. Guests are encouraged to make a reservation at Masa 14 for the Sunday night class. Once the sushi lesson is completed, guests will return to their table to enjoy the fruits of their labor in Masa 14’s dining room, where they can order a la carte from the restaurant’s full menu.
Each class will focus on the construction of Tamaki hand rolls, with crunchy shrimp or spicy tuna, and Inside-Out rolls featuring salmon or spicy salmon. For additional allure and flavor, a variety of sauces will be provided to incorporate into the rolls along with vegetables like avocados, cucumbers, and scallions. We got to check out the sushi class first hand. My rolls did not come out as pretty - apparently my knife skills are not that great - but they still tasted fantastic!
Always on the cutting edge, Chef Okochi works with Japanese, Western, and other international flavors to create “freestyle Japanese cuisine” that reflects the Japanese spirit of Zen in their refined simplicity. This was a fun interactive class, and the sushi paired well with the wine and cocktails offered.
