Bub & Pop's

Bub & Pop's is a local Philly-style deli that reinvents delicious home-style food and delicacies of the 9th Street Italian Market. Their webiste describes: "When Pop returned from WWII - a decorated hero - they bought a small corner grocery/deli in West Philly and created their own style Italian Hoagie and Braised Beef Brisket sandwiches. Almost 60 years later these sandwiches are the inspiration for the DC menu as their grandson Jonathan reinvents these classics." Closest Metro is Farragut North.

Philippe The Original

Philippe The Original is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California. Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the "French Dipped Sandwich." One day in 1918, while making a sandwich, Mathieu inadvertently dropped the sliced french roll into the roasting pan filled with juice still hot from the oven. The patron, a policeman, said he would take the sandwich anyway and returned the next day with some friends asking for more dipped sandwiches. And so was born the "French Dipped Sandwich," so called either because of Mathieu's French heritage, the French roll the sandwich is made on, or because the officer's name was French. The answer is lost to history.

Washington Deli

***Special Post by Keith***

Could it be? Is there an authentic New York style pizza place right here in Farragut West? Based on reviews from the usual sites, the oddly named Washington Deli has real deal pizza to rival any in DC. After stumbling upon some glowing recommendations I decided to give this place a shot for lunch. Closest Metro is Farragut West.

Song Que Deli

Last date I was here: 07/16/2011

Restaurant: Song Que Deli

Location: Eden Center - Falls Church, VA

Total Rating: 3.95
Food: 4, Price: 5, Service: 3, Ambience: 3, Accessibility: 3

Summary: Song Que Deli is located within the Eden Center in Falls Church, surrounded by other Vietnamese restaurants and shops. Offering traditional sandwiches known as banh mi, summer rolls, noodle dishes, as well as sweet mochi treats and boba (bubble) drinks, Song Que is a casual joint with fresh ingredients for a small price.

July 2010: Keith and I stopped by for lunch on this hot Saturday and our sandwich was so tasty. Pickled vegetables with fresh herbs on top of marinated grilled meat all on a fresh French baguette roll. We also shared the summer rolls filled with shrimp and pork, noodles, and vegetables served with a tangy peanut sauce. My pineapple boba drink was soooo good and refreshing. Keith opted for the limeade flavor slushy drink without the boba tapioca pearls. All in all, Song Que was a decent deli and I would definitely stop by again if I was in the area.

UPDATE: A year later, we returned to Song Que Deli and Keith ordered the same banh mi sandwich with limeade drink, whereas I stuck to only the summer rolls and tried the Thai tea with boba drink. There was a crowd, but the orders came out fairly fast. Still fresh and tasty, and extremely cheap - Keith wondered if he should come here more often for lunch during the week.

What I ate:

#6 Banh Mi Ga
grilled marinated chicken sandwich with pickled vegetables, mint, served on French baguette roll

Summer Rolls
shrimp, pork, noodles, vegetables wrapped in rice paper
served with tangy peanut sauce
Plus Keith ate:

#8 Banh Mi
grilled marinated pork sandwich with pickled vegetables, jalepenos, mint, served on French baguette roll

Santini's New York Style Deli

Last date I was here: 01/11/2010

Restaurant: Santini's New York Style Deli (http://www.santinisdeli.com/
)

Location: Oakton, VA

Total Rating: 3.5
Food: 4, Price: 3, Service: 3, Ambience: 3, Accessibility: 3

Summary: Santini's is a casual deli that serves quality products that are all top choice and served fresh daily. A total of three locations service the Northern Virginia area. The famous rolls and bread are baked by a local Italian bakery every night and delivered to Santini's early every morning. Santini's pizza features a thin crisp crust, Grande cheese, and specially seasoned Italian pizza sauce baked in a fire brick oven. Soups, salads, sandwiches, and even breakfast are also served.

We stopped by Santini's for a quick bite to eat before watching an event at the Patriot Center nearby. The place is casual, order at the counter, pay and seat yourself. Admire the kitschy NY Yankees, NY Jets, NY Giants decorations as you wait for your food to come out. Seating is plentiful enough and typical for a deli style shop as this was. Our food was decent, and passed the authentic pizza taste by Keith. I enjoyed my large calzone and even though I could not finish it, I still had to try a piece of cake that I had been eyeballing at the counter and ordered a slice to go (of course I had a bite though!).

What I ate:

Calzone de Casa
mozzarella, provolone, Parmesan, ricotta, Italian sausage, Danish ham
served with marinara sauce
Red Velvet Cake
Plus Keith ate:
Pizza
a slice of plain mozzarella and marinara sauce
Steak and Cheese Sandwich
grilled slices of Prime Rib eye, provolone, onions, peppers,
lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise
served on a toasted sub roll with a pickle
